I saw a poll today that shows that members of the GOP would rather the party remain ideologically pure than secure electoral wins through broadening it's appeal through policy adjustments. So you are right. The rightwingnuts of the party are in control now. That makes the GOP a non-viable party now. It won't be able to secure a national win again until it decides it wants to win the Independents and Centrists.
