The ugly truth is that if you have a majority of moderates who are not willing to fight and die in order to prevent their being governed by men willing to "maim, murder and die in the name of Allah" then the cure is not for us to kill and die for them.

Ed.. that's why I posted the McClatchy article where that US advised Afghan Army unit assisted in destroying those Taliban fighters on motorcycles.

Granted our Apaches did most of the damage, but the US advisor DID SAY that those Afghan troops displayed bravery beyond what was common sense.

There ARE Afghans, and Iraqis, and people in all of those countries who are willing to fight. But to fight you need to have someone to teach you how, equip you, provide your officers the training in the art of war and strategy, as well as to instill a sense of duty and honor in their training.

Remember a certain Baron Von Steuben and Marquis De Lafayette who traveled to the 13 colonies and assisted in training American militia and continental soldiers so they could fight for themselves?

And there is no doubt that what transpired in the newly found USA had a direct impact on the overthrow of the French Monarchy. It did the same, to a differing degree, in inspiring constitutional monarchical reform in Spain and many other European countries.

People saw that Americans were ruling themselves and THEY WANTED THAT AS WELL. They wanted to undermine the Autocrats and Nobility who had ruled over them for centuries and have say for themselves.

Yes.. these people have to fight for their own freedom. But first they have to know that it's even possible to be permitted to rule themselves. Those ideas are infectious, once instilled in the human spirit. And once people feel that sense of entitlement that comes with possessing god (allah) given human rights, they are loath to give them up to any dictator.

I don't think there's anything wrong with giving them a hand and ushering them in the right direction, especially if it prevents our having to wage a future conflict with them.
