The Japanese were importing oil from the middle east. None of the islands they held secure in the Western Pacific had oil reserves. They certainly were resourceful for their time. The level of sophistication of their aircraft and sea craft was really impressive. The Russians were very anxious to get their hands on the submarines the US sunk off Hawaii.

How warfare has changed! I saw recently the Marine Corps lost over 6800 men in their effort to take Iwo Jima. In just a few weeks. Two platoons assigned to cut off Mt. Suribachi on the Southern tip of Iwo lost all but about 7 men in that effort. That's about 120 men... all in 3 days. Horrible!!!
