Raising taxes did result in a reduction in the deficit which does have many long term economic benefits.

Where do you get this shit? Have you forgotten about the Clinton/Gingrich tax cuts? THAT, combined with the Contract With America, is what reduced the deficit. Not the '93 tax INCREASES (which has been shown to have stifled the recovery coming out of the recession).
