Just bear in mind, it is fiction, though the historical aspects of it are well researched.

His Civil War trilogy is quite readable also. Whatever you do, don't bother with "1945." It was his first book and is terrible. I couldn't get more than 50 pages into it. I would use the word "turgid" to describe the prose.

By way of example: "Suddenly the pouting sex kitten gave way to Diana the Huntress. She rolled onto him and somehow was sitting athwart his chest, her knees pinning his shoulders. 'Tell me, or I will make you do terrible things,' she hissed."

Something in there also about the sex kitten "twining the fur on his chest."
