I think Obama does care about popular support. Politicians have to. That's why it's amazing that he has been so overtly leftist, that he didn't set up a more subtle program of talking centrist and keeping most of the leftwing-stuff under the radar. Every independent in the country who voted for him now knows he was sold a bill of goods.

I can only believe Karl Rove's explanation, that the WH is in denial as to how this will play in America. I think this Chicago crew must be very provincial. They don't understand how unrepresentative Chicago politics is of most of America.
