They are not useless. They will be of use by whatever minority uses them. Access to reality through objective data is always useful to those who know how to use it. There is a peace of mind in knowing, to the extent one can, that the world is the way it is. Cognitive dissonance often creates great stress in people who try to coalesce around realities that are not, to any great extent, actually real. When people try very hard to believe something without proof they can get very very angry at people who don't play along. That anger can manifest itself in very interesting ways- it can be turned inward and outward.

So we will just have to disagree about the utility of being aware of science, and paying attention to what is happening on the frontiers. I see great utility even if the masses remain ignorant.

I disagree. With science, when the results of experiments can be reproduced, and when observations can be repeated and verified, we aren't talking about opinions. We're talking about facts.

The sun did not revolve around the earth five hundred years ago, even though the cultural norm, as you define it, said that it did.
