That's a matter of perspective. There is a very big distance between soar throat and liver cancer. Not every non-life threatening condition is as benign as soar throat. Unless your life depends on it, most specialists and surgeries have 1-2 year waiting list. An MRI will take you 8-months to do. And forget about even the idea of wanting to shop around for a good doctor. It simply is not possible.

Additionally, I object to the Canadian system on the human rights basis. Whether or not my doctor and I wish to enter a mutually agreed contract is our own business. The government has no right to interfere.

Fortunately, the US is in no danger of duplicating the Canadian system here and calling the health care reform a "Canadian system" is just a scare tactic.

What has been proposed is a way for the government to enter the health insurance business and use economies of scale to get a better return on the money it is already spending. There is no risk of people losing their choice of who they wish to see or of doctors being forced to work only for the government insurance.

PS For nearly 10 years now, I've been advising all my friends to move their assets out of USD. This has proven to be a very good call. Even today, I estimate the USD is overvalued by at least 100%. Canadian and Australian dollars are good alternatives to USD. So it is not just the Canadian doctors who should have an exit plan; everyone should.

PPS Here is a comparative chart of SPY vs TSX. A lot of the gains are due to currency differential. You can do similar charts of your own comparing Australian market or even gold.
