Here's my reasoning - for every time I get into the freezer for something, I get into the refrigerator 4 times. I'd rather have the width you get by having a bottom mount freezer and have the items I use most right at eye level. We currently have a side by side unit we bought in 1996, and the freezer compartment is quite small. You get a bigger freezer with the bottom mount without giving up fridge space.
