In the shots from the rear or the side where you can't discern Elvis' face, it was an Elvis double.

I would swear it had to be an imitator.

In the original airing of the '68 special, Elvis was shown singing the song in the white suit. But NBC also taped him doing the song in the black leather suit. Here's a video showing a combination of the two looks ...
