Why, if the Path is only eight fold, do so many 12 step programs exist?

As for the Bible, I don't buy it. It makes no sense to me. I've read it and it's a bundle of contradictions and the guy they claim is God is a real SOB - sadistic and killing innocent women and children. And look at poor Job. What did he ever do to deserve that crap? Just a bunch of S&M in it, if you ask me (okay, so you didn't ask).

I also approach the New, Improved, Clothes 50% Brighter Testament with definite skepticism, and in fact, I don't buy a lot of I see there. But I have to admit, God in the New Testament is a lot closer to what I'd expect a self-respecting kind of God to be. Jesus isn't a bad guy, but that wasn't nice of him to run the money lenders out of the Temple. I thought he taught people to turn the other cheek? How come he didn't realize at the time that they'd just end up on Wall Street in a couple millenium? And what would he think of all that flash and glitz at the Vatican?

A Course in Miracles has a mantra or aphorisim or whatever you call it that goes something like "God speaks to me thoughout the day." I like it, and have tried it, but maybe Pacific Bell has the contract for the lines, since I never can hear anything from the other end.

And that quote about staying out of the battle...I thought samurai were supposed to be into Zen and all. Isn't there some zen quote about if you're fighting, just fight? And isn't the Bhagavad Gita couched in terms of a battlefield exercise? That being the case, why would you remove yourself from the battle? And what battle are we talking about, anyway?

And this asking things of God, I thought God, being omnipresent and omniscient, already knows everything you want and need. I would think asking him for something isn't such a good idea, since he already knows what is coming to you and everyone else.

And why doesn't God come up with a new, updated version of the Bible, anyway? These dudes who translated it a few thousand years ago used different language back then, and God knows what it meant then. For instance, today, "bad" can mean "good." So, maybe the translation back then had some errors along those lines. That could screw the whole thing up. Time for a new, updated version. Of course some would say that the Mormons already have one.

The new version could go something like this:
"And God looked upon the Evil Empire, and said unto them, "You shall disintegrate and cleave unto me with a new McDonalds in every city, and it was good, especially with fries and a Coke."

Who were these people who did the translations anyway? Did they take dictation? Did they use one of those machines court reporters' use?

And what about Mel Brooks, playing Moses in History of the World, part I. Remember when he said, "Here are God's fifteen....[drop, crash] I mean 10, 10 commandments!!" Could there be other parts of the
Bible that went down like that?

And isn't it a pisser that Moses, aka Charleton Heston, supports the National Rifle Association?

Just some metaphysical thoughts on a Saturday morning.
