(Life member of AARP)

People join AARP at 55 for the discounts. Almost all are oblivious to its politics. The few who think of it as an advocacy group assume it has the best interests of the elderly at heart. And maybe it does, but it has a perspective on what those best interests are that may or may not not be compatible with one's own.

Tough to give up the discounts even if one questions the politics. AARP surely knows that.
