V., the arguments about the "truthfulness" of science for me don't seem relevant at all as to whether Palin's lies are beyond the reach of normal political lies. The fact that they are is easily settled.

As for the second part of your argument as I understand it, the one about differing cultures as between Palin's culture and ours or the MSM or Washington, I think you took it much too far. You've turned it into a sort of cultural solipsism in which everyone's cultural point of view is equally valid and incapable of being criticized.

That's certainly not post modernism (I start with Rorty on this one). Or historicism. Both of which argue/assume there are finally no universal truths which transcend historical periods (grandly conceived) and cultures (grandly conceived). In the latter case, from a historicist point of view, the difference between Palin's friends culture and the MSM, for instance, is something like a subculture of a subculture.

If you wish, I'll be happy to argue these assertions with you but it gets terribly abstract terribly quickly. And we may not run out of beer before everyone kicks us off the thread.

On the ancillary point regarding the philosophy of science, I take my start from Kuhn and Feyerabend with paradigms. But that's terribly controversial and grown more so over the years. Again, it's way off the topic of this thread.

If you are interested, you can search the old FADG thread in the early years in which I let myself get trapped into spending more time than I should on these issues.
