If you could actually eliminate all the costs (didn't have any contractual obligations, military retirement, VA, etc.) to worry about the fraction wouldn't be all that small, but it would still be well under half. Leave in place those obligations and costs, and only slash the military, don't eliminate it, and yes it would be a rather small fraction.

That's not true. Look at how Dave is bitching about the 800 billion TARP - yet we spend nearly that much in acknowledged costs on the military YEARLY. All you right wingers are up in arms about the TEN YEAR cost of health care - which wouldn't cover TWO YEARS of the acknowledged military budget.

Much of the TRUE cost of our military is hidden in other budgets -Dept. of Energy - atomic weapons, Intelligence services, etc.

The military is the biggest chunk of government PORK out there.
