JQP, the message of job is that there are things more important than comfort in this life.

yeah, i'm with you - it is a scary thought similar could come our way.

note that job never turned against god - he *knew* god was right and just and good. he knew the test was temporary and the reward was eternal.

scary, nonetheless.

job was also right that it didn't happen to him b/c he deserved it - it just happened.

that's my view and i'm not offended if people disagree.

while it is reasonable for a person to conclude god was harsh (yes, it sounds harsh to me, too!), i believe it is also reasonable to believe that there was a higher purpose for the harshness - to tests job's loyalty and to strengthen job's faith. i believe job's mind went places simply not possible without enduring what he endured.
