MURCHISON Metals and its joint venture partner Mitsubishi Corp are targeting production rate of between 25 million and 35 million tonnes of iron ore a year from its Jack Hills project in Western Australia.

Initial studies have found about 10 million tonnes a year of the output could be the premium product of direct shipping ore, Murchison said, with the remainder hematite sinter feed and magnetite concentrates.

The Perth-based company said an interim resource statement for Jack Hills is due out shortly but that it has also identified more targets that require further testing.

"Jack Hills is now a substantial project in international terms, sitting above many other projects in terms of the size of the target resource, quality, premium products low in impurities and the target production profile," Murchison chairman Paul Kopejtka said in a statement.
