She's always enjoyed playing solitare to relax and started out with that... re this:although I could understand if she didn't want to do any more cooking) or genealogy the former you nailed. she fed 4 children plus my father all those years, and then him, until he retired and decided he enjoyed it. when he retired, she retired from cooking, tho she fixes a mean bunch of leftovers, and grilled cheese, and creamed tuna on toast. but genealogy - that has become a passion for them both. She spends tons of hours on it, and she is so organized. she has an entire bookshelve of the 'stuff' on the family, separate books for each branch. and they take trips to research at libraries and take pix at graveyards. dad also spends hours each week on stock stuff. he starting investing as soon as he got his first (and last) job with ARCO. he had me reading the wall street journal at 12. he's turned most of it over to a fellow who is really quite good and understands investing for retired people, but he kept a portion because... he just loves it, and the net opens up a big wide world for investors. my mother does still clean. like a crazed woman, imo (not mindly a lil mess, myself). she'll go sit at the computer for a few minutes playing some cards and then bemoan she has rested too long. dang. some nights they are down there together, each on their computers, digging into finding some obscure ancester and go on and on. It amuses me. you are right about what happens to so many old people. I feel blessed both for them, and for myself, that they are so active and interested. eeek, that was a long post. but I am quite fond of them, and your post was so true.
