Libertarianism is an attractive philosophy in the same way anarchism is - if you are under the illusion you are self-sufficient, it is probably something you can imagine yourself living under. When push comes to shove and you start asking hard questions like

- Who keeps the thugs away?
- Are fire departments ony paid as they control fires for people who can pay?
- Are schools all private enterprises, only for those who pay?
- Are companies and large cooperatives able to act without restraint, make secret deals and undermine other activities?

Most people who espouse little ell libertarianism are as silly as the little c communists in their naivete and idealism. Practical governments can't espouse ridiculous extremes and therefore all long standing governments (even ones that claim certain virtues) are compromises.

Both of my Grandparents were members of a Workers Org. in East L.A. in the 1929-mid 30's as they both suffered under the Czar in Russia and wanted to make sure that the Capitalist "Czars" in America didn't go the same way. They realized after Stalin gained control that his brand of Communism was as egregious as the Czars rule. If they were in the movie industry or running for office, they would have been called in front of the House Un-American Activities Committee and the crazy Joseph McCarthy. I am very proud of my heritage and what they stood for. Both were nearly killed in Russia by anti-semites and Czarists hunting down Bolshevists. They became REAL AMERICANS, not the shams like Sarah Palin and her followers who have no idea what being an American really is. What being an American means is standing up for the rights of all groups, including minorities, even jerks like the right-wingers like her and Limbaugh, etc...
