Could we not agree the best way to approach economic problems would be to start by looking at what failed and what worked in the past?

I'm unaware of any such agreement on the part of economists. Thats why I said that you can't find agreement on attribution even retroactively.

You will not find any agreement on employment curves looking back at this recession with or without the stimulus. Keynseians will say unemployment would have been higher without stimulus, Austrian's will say the opposite.
