We should have asked who the casualties were going to be in the drug war. Clearly the expectations would be for it to be limited cops and bad guys. The truth is for every one of them there are probably 100 others, mostly young people. To kill the cartels, we medicalize it just like ending prohibition ended the criminality behind alcohol. Unfortunately, we immediately made an alternative, pot, even more illegal. I just don't see people seeking the "glamor" of medically-treated drug addiction or use any more than they seek the glamor of obesity or hypertension.
