Still maybe the lack of decent opposition has slowed down his spirit some.

Pal, I don't think it is his lack of opposition. It is his late mother who most likely raised him to be a very considerate person. Someone who should strive hard to be extremely sensitive to the feelings of others. She certainly took pride in raising a "charcoal black" kid in the midst of a White community. And why not. She should be proud. And I am sure we all are proud of her too to be that bold in those days. And the same goes for his grandmother. While they did not live to see the day he raised his right hand, but as he said during his 2004 keynote in Boston: (excerpt)

I am sure the birthers, teabaggers etc. are mentality challenged even to understand what he said about the greatness of this nation.

He will certainly take this nation there in the face of our encouragement to act and not bother too much about including everybody particularly those who refuse to undo their clenched fists.
