Intel, Samsung get closer

Ask Samsung Semi president Yoon-Woo Lee what makes his company
different from other DRAM makers charging into embedded logic and he
answers simply: "Intel." His deal with the MPU giant to turn out a single-chip
graphics controller with embedded DRAM "could create the large volumes
critical to making Samsung a viable suppler of systems on a chip," he tells
EBN's Jack Robertson in an interview recently in his Kiheung office. He also
expects to be in production early next year on an embedded 16-meg
graphics chip developed with Chips & Technologies, which Intel is
acquiring. Samsung's ties with Intel are getting stronger. It is a major SRAM
supplier to Intel, while the chip maker has a 10% stake in its new Austin fab.

Shooting the moon!

A big bet will be placed this next week when Hitachi unveils its SH-4
embedded CPU delivering 360 Mips and VLSI Technology reveals its
system-on-a-chip strategy built around the SH-4 core and Windows CE.
They are betting the combined power of the SH-4, PCI-bus capability, and
a beefed-up release of Windows CE from Microsoft will pave the way to a
new type of convergence product that pushes beyond standalone Web-TV
and big-screen PCs, Alexander Wolfe writes in EE Times.

It likely will combine game platform, Internet-access device, and a DVD
player in one unit. First systems will likely be previewed in January, with
forecasts calling for a 20 million-unit market by '99. But plenty of
competition is coming up fast.
