Steve, with GW it doesn't matter to me what side people are on. But some people have better reasons than others.

There are a lot of tricks being played; the most prominent is "standard of proof". The law gives us two standards:

[1] Criminal - "beyond reasonable doubt"
[2] Civil - "on the balance of probabilities"

---

Humans use the civil standard all the time: in investing, budgeting, weather forecasting, epidemiology and so on. It's the way we make decisions based on the best - but incomplete - information.

The trick being played is to demand absolute proof for unprovable propositions: that's a standard that can never be met, despite the fact that humans routinely use a much lower standard for many important activities.

---

But it doesn't matter: scientists may tell us what man is doing, but history tells us what he will do.

It's the same as the economic and financial crises: we don't need economists to tell us how it will evolve; history will do the job.

Men will keep doing what they've always done: they'll foul their own nest, and drive themselves to the edge of disaster before they come to their senses. So I don't worry about the debate: mankind's future is foretold by its past.

Jim
