"I suspect a federal sales tax or VAT will become politically feasible a lot faster than people expect. By excluding from the tax staples such as food, medicine and shelter, the tax will fall mostly on imports. By using the revenues to cut the deficit and reduce business taxes, a consumption tax can actually help the long term competitiveness of the US and increase its savings, things that are absolutely necessary to get us out of the hole we are in."

I like the sound of this, but am not economically astute enough to comment on this in a meaningful way. Let John and Steve have a go at it.
