You have "historical" examples of that point?

Look at the Synfuels projects, from those of Germany in WWII (which probably made sense because they where cut off from oil imports, but which where not cost effective in normal terms), to all the ideas being pushed in the 70s. Look at all the investment in alternative power now. In terms of nominal max output some of it seems good, but most of it is rather poor in terms of total Kw/h produced over time, and even worse in terms of how much it allows us to reduce investment in and use of non-alternative supply.

Fossil fuels received no gov't help, did they?

Sure they received government help, and still do. Government is a busy body that likes to stick its nose in to just about everything.

But 1 - The help was much smaller in dollars per energy output terms or as a percentage of total investment

and 2 - The government gets massive tax revenue from fossil fuels. It has made more money over the years from gasoline and diesel than the oil companies have.
