In my opinion, it all started around the time Barry Goldwater started to run for natonal office. Ronald Reagen, Newt Gingrich, neocons, and other RW subgroups instinctively new they (themselves) were and are still considered "kooks". Newt Gingrich and his "contract with America" was the start of what the RW considered an existential cultural war. They started to seed what they called "think tanks" (eg Club for Growth, National Center for Policy Analysis, on and on...).

MSM, progressives, and the intellectual coummunity at universities, colleges and elsewhere were and are still dismissive of this movement.

My contention is that these "kooks" do a better job of organising and at putting out very effective sound bites.

Liberals, Progressive, and People calling themselves Centrists are clueless wrt how effective the RW movement really is.
