What you say about Calif's physicality and geographic diversity is so true. But how else can one explain the dismantling of a world class university system, the closing of libraries and court houses, the decay of infrastructure, but to lay it at the feet of the lack of political will of its representatives and the proposition ballot box system that lets less than 11% of the voters gum up the works?

Which, IMHO, is the root of the cause and a reflection of the values of the people who elect these politicians. These problems started long before the downturn in the economy. It started with the passage of Prop 13 in the late 70's that stopped the raising of property taxes on real estate until that piece of property changed hands without an alternate funding system to pick up the difference.

I do fear you are accurate when you say that California leads the nation by the impact of the individual--the individual has triumphed in California over the concept of the greater good. Let me get off the soapbox.
