meathead, i have 4 yr old pcs that are 486's and pentiums.
they have been pushed to the factory floor and control barcode printers, testing, data collection, many more single focused tasks
In fact the pentiums that I used to design a touchscreen- barcode scanner data collection system right here in austin are still doing a great job and the response time is instantaneous and it processes
100,000 transactions a week in a small compnay. It allows via touchscreen/scanners for serial quality data trakcing to happen with an human factured engineered soltuion to the massive problem of getting realtime feedback on quality problems on boards in a contract manufacturing SMT environment.
These types of applications are where the p166's and the p200's I 'm buying today will be in the yr 2001. I've actully been doing the push down strategy since 1983.
This glorification of the pc over the process is the single mistake that I/S groups make today.
They say " We have this new p233 we are giving you or we have Win 98 we are going to install" then they put the same old crummy
application systems on that new computer and continue to deprive their users (customers) of leading edge applications that could give them real competitive advantage, improve management effectiveness, and employee productivity through improving the quality of the mfg'ing or business processes while drastically redcuing cost and cycle times.

There...I've done it again......got on my I/S highhorse.
No one on this planet is more critical of I/S and I am I/S.

Grove recently expounded on these themes in a speech to
the National Press Club in D.C. carried on C-SPAN.
Maybe the transcript might be found through CSPAN web site.
