As a system designer, I don't believe I've ever seen
the types of advancements we are witnessing on the
hardware front. Here is just a simplified sampling
of core technology boosts:

Technology Today 1998 1999/2000

Processor PentII 300Mhz PentII 450Mhz Merced 900Mhz
Bus speed 66Mhz 100Mhz 150Mhz
Memory 66MhzSDRAM 100MhzSDRAM 400MhzRambus
Ethernet 10/100 MBit 100/1000 MBit 100/1000 MBit
Video AGP 66Mhz AGP2x 133 Mhz AGP4x 266Mhz

Add to that, emerging standards:
USB, DVD, IEEE 1398, PCI 64bit/66Mhz, DMI 2.0, plus...

Again, I can't stress enough the fact that the PC
is far from a commodity and the expansion at the high
end where Dell is firmly positioned is gonna be
incredible. Furthermore, todays high end will be
2000's entry level which means the replacement cycle
likely won't abate and may even accelerate.

Who can help us out on software advancements?
