What is left is, imo, more trivial.

If our political system is so fractured that we are paralyzed into inaction when faced with major issues, that won't be trivial. Eventually the chronic financial problems will take us into a wall, and massive sacrifices will hit everyone, thanks to our indulging in these perpetual whiny pissing wars instead of getting things done in DC.

This cracked me up- since at the time Lincoln was president the country was -literally- fractured.

Well, yes, no one said anything different. The slavery issue was the most obvious fissure that had been building for decades. The fissures today are less obvious and more insidious for that reason.
