The Europeans learned in the 1950's that letting themselves be sucked dry in fruitless foreign conflicts added nothing to their security, it just wrecked their already shaky postwar economies. They put their time and resources into NATO and the EU where they were actually contributing to their own well-being, and did OK since then.

He didn't make much use of persuasion. He just out and out lied to get us into war. I don't know why Democrats didn't and are not making a big deal out of Bush's lying.
