Our politics isn't about rational debate, but one line slogans and vilification. The number of people who object to that is sadly a minority nowadays; and when politicians get lots of attention and talk-jocks make TONS of money reinforcing bad behavior over sound debate, it's a self-perpetuating trend. Many folks in the center will just get disgusted and walk away from politics again, leaving the stage open for the Karl Roves of the world to try to work their 50.x% "magic" all over again. None of it makes for a governable country.
