Vitesse Semiconductor (VTSS) is probably a good place to start. One of the popular money magazines rated them as a "top 10" stock to hold over the next 5 years, and if you look at their home page they are making state of the art chips for most major communications products:

My thinking on learning more about ASIC design is that I think you will know more about demand for LSI Logic and VLSI products if you know more about it. I talked to a top FC ASIC design engineer and he told me the basic process, but I didn't want to waste his time walking me through it.
