>$1,000 - what is wrong with the following configuration:
MediaGX 166MHz with integrated soundcard and graphics, 33k modem, 1G hard drive, 12x CD Rom, speakers at $499.99 (Micro Center retail)
add 16 Mb, a reasonable monitor and a reasonable printer - and you have a system that can pretty much do whatever today's programs demand and you still have not spent $1,000.

Yes, there are more powerful graphics cards and better soundcards - but like there are Accuras and Ferraris, many more people are very well served with the Accuras.

I happen to be long INTC and wonder how foolish I am.

Have a GREAT day

Paul

It will be interesting to see what happens to today's buyers of $1000 machines in about 18 months or so.

I'll bet they upgrade to the NEW sub $1000 machines at that time! (Which they could buy today for <<$2000!)

If you are right and the buyer of $1,000 machines buys a new one next year for $1,000, he may be better off. The old machine will not be worthless. It may have a low market price. But you can donate it to a poor relative or someone disadvandaged. For them, it will be very valuable.

And I disagree about the new $1,000 machine will be more powerful than today's $2,000 machine (if the trend of last couple of years continues)
