Thoughts on Hong Kong . . . I think Hong Kong will be forced to abandon "the peg." Not because they lack the currency reserves to defend it, but because of economic considerations. Every country in Asia has now devalued (at least 30%?) against the dollar during the last 2 years. Only HK is left pegged to the dollar. To defend its currency against speculators, HK will have to maintain higher interest rates. This puts HK businesses at a disadvantage; higher interest rates will hurt real estate, businesses and consumers, and HK's cost of labor is now much higher relative to its neighbors. More important, now that HK is a part of China, it is easier for businesses to pack up and move to mainland China. Why stay in HK if you can lower your cost of doing business next door? HK's only choice is to devalue. The longer they delay, the greater the economic harm. John
