The old thinking was that THC (active ingredient in cannabis) was harmless, but there is good epi data from Sweden now that it does increase rates of schizophrenia. The old thinking was that it was just a coincidence. Similar data doesn't exist for alcohol, although yes, alcohol has a far far higher rate of accidental injury associated with it.
