WE, as a public, were all little paranoid up through the Russian Missile Crisis. I never lost much sleep over it since I just accepted it as a fact of life having grown up with it. I agree with you that Iran could probably close the Straits by sinking a few large tankers there in the channels. However, I'm more intrigued by the question of what would happen if we announced our policy as being that we do not have any objection to Iran obtaining nuclear weapons and the subsequent effect this might have on the Iran Government.
