There might be another explanation for why celebrities don't pick up the check. If they use their credit card, they have to use their "real" signature, which is always different from their "autograph" signature. That signature can be copied and used to steal from them and if it's used as an "autograph" it will fetch more money. Most of them have business managers who only give them so much cash - walking around money really. Not enough to pick up a check. And most of them listen to their business managers - there are exceptions, of course.
