It would be a lot faster to go HSR from Bay Area/Sac to LA than by air, by the time you figure getting there an hour early and driving time to and from the airports. Probably be the same for Eugene?-Portland-Seattle-Spokane.

I've read many pieces supporting the claim that high speed rail projects are not feasible. The exception being the highly congested corridor between NY and DC.

However, in California it doesn't seem to matter whether or not a project can pay for itself. Especially since the Fed. Govt. is cavalier about bailing out any state having financial problems.

Who is going to actually ride on these trains?

If there were comfortable, reliable, speedy trains between NYC and Boston or NYC and DC, it would be no contest between that and planes or cars. Definitely would take the train.
