Holy ghost of Knute Rockne!]

---------------

And we thought the bankers were over paid.

It's amazing what coaches make today. Once they get the
job, they're pretty much set for life financially.

The only problem I have with firing Weiss and not giving
him one more year to put it all together, is they knew
they were hiring an offensive coordinator and not a head
coach.

The guy literally had to learn on the job, how to be a
head coach, in addition to making the transition from
the NFL to college football.

6-6 is not acceptable given the talent they had, but they
were literally in every game, and Weiss fixed the number one
problem from last year - the offensive line.

The problem this year was defense.

He hired John Tenuta from Georgia Tech who IS a top
defensive coach, but kept Corwin Brown on as the
defensive coordinator and Asst. Head Coach. They
really never gave Tenuta complete control. That may
have been a change that Weiss could have sold the
administration on.

If Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate decided to come back,
and they do with the defense what they did with the
offensive line... they'd be where they need to be in 2010.

And they got this Freshman Manti T'eo on defense, who is
going to be a legend. Picture Chris Zorich as a linebacker.

I'm mad as hell at Weiss for going from 6-2 to 6-6, when
9-3 seemed a worse case scenario. But they might have been
one year away from putting it all together and being in the
hunt for the national title. And now with a coaching change
they may loose their two best players to the NFL draft.

If they get Stoops, at least they'll find out if
it's a Notre Dame problem, or a coaching problem,
once and for all (and it may be a Notre Dame problem).

And Charles... I hear you on the point spreads, betting
against Notre Dame at home when a favorite was a better
trade than going long SLW in the $2's <vbg>.

I very much liked Charlie Weiss and was hoping he would
be given one more year. But, I also understand that losing
the last 4 in a row with the talent they have on offense,
is a tough pill to swallow.

Rumors for the last year, or so, were that Urban Meyer
would take the job once his children were all in college,
and out of high school. I've never followed up on their
ages, but that was the talk...

I like Bob Stoops and he brings the defensive gravitas
that the program needs. Brian Kelly from Cinci comes
highly endorsed, and he and Stoops are the only names
I'm hearing locally fwiw.

There's some cRaZy money numbers being talked about
for Stoops... numbers like the largest contract ever
in college football history.

That would be mighty hard to turn down.

We shall see.

If Clausen & Tate leave for the NFL, could be an ugly
transition year next year. I'l love to see those two
one more year... I think they'd erase all the records
and become "the" greatest QB/Receiver combo in ND history
waking up the echo's of Hanratty & Seymour, Theisman &
Gatewood, and then we could have the debate on who was the
greatest ND QB of all time, Joe Montana, Brady Quinn, or
Jimmy Classen.

If only...
