What many seem to not focus on is that xDSL is signif. different from prior modem upgrades. Previously one needed to either get standards approved by standards body / est. industry lead, and get ISPs to install the hardware, preferably yours, that worked w/higher speed standard.

The xDSL modem (well it really isn't a modem, but serves the same general purpose from end user point of view) game involves most importantly getting the Telcos to install compatible products at the first Telco switch the wire from your premesis reaches. Got to bring along the telcos. (Unless the attempt by certain ISPs to get themselves declared competitive local telcos by FCC works, in which case Telcos will be forced, in theory, to allow ISPs to camp the equipment out at telco switches to accomplish the deed....
