COLAs aren't determined by your subjective opinion, they are a matter of law and derived from specific formulas. As for "only" retirees hurting, did you notice that they suspended IRA withdrawals for 2009? My Mom is going to save a few thousand in taxes because she was able to live on income from non-IRA investments this year. One can always cherrypick around the issues to paint a picture that one group or another is being treated unfairly. But cherrypicking only gets you a little basket of stuff, not broader understanding. When the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire soon, I think you will get your wish about Clinton era tax rates. But with healthcare having become a total train wreck, trying to push through a proactive measure in this Congress to change tax rates would have been the final straw in what is already a swirling toilet bowl.
