This ECM system basically jams all the cell phone and any other signal that's being used to trigger the IED.

Sounds a lot like the "Warlock" system.

But it doesn't help against "hardwired" IEDs. That's much more difficult to root out, unless there's a wire showing, or you pick up a thermal signature of the operator sitting camped out waiting for a target to drive by.

Slarty, the jamming technology is great. Unfortunately, every time we innovate a partial fix, they innovate a new virus.

That's the problem with modern occupations given the fact that massive killing technology is now cheap, simple and available to any simpleton with an idea he thinks is worth killing to promote.

I remember not too long ago when the aerial tracking abilities were touted as some kind of top secret, almost magical cure for the IED problems. Unfortunately, the other guy's pretty smart, there's a lot of volume in this big old earth of ours and the effectiveness of such tactics are now lessened.

Maybe someday we'll find a way to counter IEDs with technology. I remember when our enemies could pretty effectively hide under the jungle canopy but I think those days are gone and maybe some day we'll be able to find a signature for explosives and spot them more easily. I worry, however, about a world where the government has such tremendous technical capabilities that they can "know" almost everything.

I kind of miss the days when the police power of the government was not quite so overwhelming. Ed
