And I happen to think that one of the major benefits is that it forces the country to really pay attention to what the foreign policy decisions of the government are. One has to ask oneself if both the Iraq war and the decision last night would have been the same if the draft was in effect. That in and of itself is a value beyond just the "bottom line". Plus you then get a pool of the population, now very diminished, that has this common experience and is knowledgeable about what it takes to conduct a military operation--not to mention the lawmakers that have served that bring that experience to the table. It is wisdom multiplier.
