Actually, it all has less to do with individual characteristics than with the political structure of Afghanistan. Basically, a kinship, ethnic based structure, with only very loose ties defining a national entity. Apparently, it's strong enough when attacked, i.e. the Russians and others, to loosely bond together. But without that incentive, all the talk of training Afghan soldiers seems to me misplaced.

I gather, however, that both McChrystal and Petraeus are smart enough to know all this. So it's wait and see time.
