<taking the train has less prestige>

My mother took an Amtrak trip to visit me taking my nephew in tow. They arrived 8 hours late. Yes, 8 HOURS. We had to pick her up at midnight. Oh, and no taxis. It is hard to plan a reasonable trip that doesn't unduly impact your hosts (or you) when the trains don't run on time. Trains in this country have become a means for seniors to pine about days past with their grandkids.

<There is a bus...>
Ah, Before my enlistment started I sold my VW and used the money to buy the 1976 Ameri-pass from Greyhound. Unlimited "See America" for $99 for 3 months I think. I got my money's worth!! I had a backpack and travelers checks, some of which I carried on my person and some of which were in the pack. Sometimes I lived and slept outdoors, sometimes (once a week or so) in a cheap motel but often, I simple planned my day so that I used the bus as my bed.

At 18 years old I was willing to travel this way. Probably not now.
