I have a Utah relative, born and bred Republican and strong social conservative, who had a business failure in 2001. To recoup and pay back debt, he went to Iraq with KBR and stayed with them for five years. He always worked in some sort of food distribution capacity, nothing requiring any skills or more than a high school education. As right-wing as he was (and still is), he will laughingly admit he and his co-workers were paid an obscene (his word) amount of money to do the jobs they did. Why should they? They know that they can rely on the U.S. defense umbrella. Yes, that actually was my point. The US is helping enable Europeans to enjoy healthcare and other social benefits that we can only daydream about.
