Absent some dramatic event, neither the 2010 or the 2012 elections are likely to be decided on foreign policy.

Perhaps not directly. But what we can do for our own economy is restricted by what we spend in Afghanistan. Big increases in spending in Afghanistan is going to make the cries of runaway debt even that more shrill.
