(I see you were able to find an encyclopedia... although you neglected to credit the source for your cut 'n paste. <g>)

Alexander the Great had some really *good* mountaineers with him, some rock-climbing fighters par-excellence... enabling him to surprise some of the locals who thought they were safe in their mountain redoubts... (gee... wonder if we could only figure out a way to go after the Tali and al Qaeda types hiding out in *their* sanctuaries just across the border into Pakistan? Whmmmmmm....)

Still, Alexander was unable to hold on to the area for long, and his Empire soon was erased from the maps, and the Afghans quickly went back to their 'un-occupied' status....
