That is DOE chart, it shows average price for residential
customers currently $14 BTU, from the same report that
looks at inventories, storage, etc. So, utility companies
are pocketing $10 BTU because of their monopoly on the market.
Often run by cities or monopolies, aren't they? And many
cities are bankrupt, so
they need extra income. In other words, NG is not a free market
per se, consumers don't pay free market prices. On the other
hand, competition between different gas stations quickly leads
to a drop of retail gas price that follows wholesale price.
So, the situation of a large spread may persist, as it did,
and that suppresses demand that would otherwise pick up as
a function of price.
